India at 80: The Case You Can't Ignore: VB

Today India completes 79 years of freedom and marks its 80th Independence Day.

No country is perfect. India isn't either.

But here is what I keep coming back to as an investor.

We have a stock market that is large, liquid and genuinely diverse. A government that wants growth. And an RBI that has earned its credibility the hard way.

That combination gives us something rare β€” the ability to sleep at night. No sudden decision wipes out an industry overnight. No run on bank deposits.

We sleep at night for one more reason. A defence force that has quietly protected this country for eight decades and asked for very little in return.

We take all three for granted. They are the floor everything else is built on.

Now the numbers:

πŸ“ˆ 10th to 6th largest economy β€” GDP of $4.15 trillion, growing 7.7% in FY26. In 2014 we were 10th, at about $2 trillion. Economists see 1QFY27 GDP at 8% - highest in the world.

πŸ’Ή 5th largest stock market in the world β€” roughly $5 trillion in value. Only the US, China, Japan and Hong Kong are bigger.

πŸ†” 134 crore live Aadhaar holders β€” 94.6% of the country on the world's largest digital ID system.

πŸ“± 23.7 billion UPI payments in July alone β€” worth β‚Ή29.9 lakh crore. India now handles close to half of every real-time digital payment on earth (IMF).

πŸš€ First country to land near the Moon's south pole β€” Chandrayaan-3 did it for β‚Ή615 crore. Less than most Hollywood films cost. The film Interstellar cost more to make.

πŸ›‘οΈ Defence exports up 56 times in 12 years β€” β‚Ή686 crore in FY14 to β‚Ή38,424 crore in FY26, to more than 80 countries. Domestic defence production is now β‚Ή1.78 lakh crore.

πŸ“² World's #2 mobile phone maker β€” 99.2% of phones sold in India are made in India, up from 26% in 2014. Phones are now our single largest export item.

πŸ’Ύ First made-in-India chip rolled out this July β€” from Sanand, Gujarat. The government has committed β‚Ή2.03 lakh crore to semiconductors, with 12 projects and β‚Ή1.64 lakh crore of investment lined up. A supply chain we did not have five years ago.

πŸ”Œ Electronics production at β‚Ή13 lakh crore β€” exports up 11 times in 12 years. The target is $500 billion by 2030-31.

πŸ›£οΈ Highways up 60% β€” 91,287 km to 1,46,572 km. Expressways up 33 times. Logistics cost is down to 7.97% of GDP.

⚑ Solar capacity up 58 times β€” 2.8 GW to 164 GW. India crossed 300 GW of clean power capacity this month and hit its 2030 Paris target five years early. Half our power capacity is now non-fossil, a 2030 target we hit five years early.

So here is my view.

India is no longer a tactical bet you hold for a few quarters. It is a structural allocation you hold for decades.

A government that wants growth. A central bank that has kept its word. Forex reserves of $707 billion. Inflation at 4.45%. GDP growth at 8%. And a market deep enough to actually put serious money to work.

Happy Independence Day.

Here's to the next 80.
